At a young age, he traveled to Iloilo, then to Australia where he won the lottery together with Francisco del Castillo. On his return to Manila, he was befriended by Procopio and Andres Bonifacio. He then joined the Katipunan and donated his lottery winnings for the setting up of a printing press, where Katipunan's Kalayaan, kartilla and forms were printed.
He often moved from house to house to avoid detection by the authorities.
He returned to Capiz to organize a Katipunan branch. On his way to Kalibo, he was arrested and jailed by the Spaniards. Attempts to rescue him failed. He and 18 other suspects from Capiz, including his brother, were later shot in the back. Those still alive were bayoneted.
